Isaac Julien's Lessons of the Hour - Frederick Douglass has been longlisted for the 2023 Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards celebrating excellence in photography and moving image publishing. 

Lessons of the Hour — Frederick Douglass was conceived as an artwork, with sumptuously illustrated pages that depict both Isaac Julien’s artworks and the archival images, some of which have never been printed in a book before.

Since 1985 the Awards have recognised individuals who have made an outstanding original or lasting educational, professional, historical and cultural contribution to literature concerning photography or the moving image (including film, television, video, and new media).

The 2023 Awards welcomed 269 submissions, the highest in its history and a significant increase on previous years’ totals, reflecting the dynamism and demand in moving image and photography publishing.

The book is edited by Isaac Julien and Cora Gilroy-Ware, with Vladimir Seput, and it can be purchased through DelMonico Books and all the other major retailers.

The longlisted publications will be showcased by the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation at this year’s Photo London (11-14 May 2023) at Booth P13.
